HOW SKETCHWORK COMES TO MEAN SO MUCH

I look at the painting
and I sigh at the masterpiece
and I marvel at the human spirit.
Genius contained in a square! White oils and swirling brush strokes for the clouds.

Now there’s ten paintings, all equally as masterful.
And I have to wonder: where do I place my eye? Can I go back far enough to a spot where all ten are visible at once?

A hundred paintings and I can hardly focus my attention on one.

A thousand, a million.
All the paintings that will ever be!
Billions and billions of masterworks.
And suddenly, none of that means much to me. I’d rather the prize of my daughter’s doodle, knowing it’s one of a kind.
